When he returns, he is attacked and stabbed to death by the other men Then, in probably the most ironic action in the whole story, the murderers, to congratulate themselves, drink from the poisoned cup and .....

His attempt to efface them is unsuccessful, and he realizes that he can't make them go away. This symbolizes Holden's need to protect, and realization that he can't be the savior of society's corruption.
