.... is the theme of maturity. The two rivers that are part of the Devon School property symbolize how Gene and Finny grow up through the course of the novel. The Devon River is preferred by the students because it is above the dam and contains clean water. It is a symbol of childhood and innocence because it is safe and simple. It is preferred which shows how the boys choose to hold onto their youth instead of growing up. The Naguamsett is the disgustingly dirty river which symbolizes adulthood because of its complexity. The two rivers intermingle showing the boys' changes from immature individuals to slightly older and wiser men. .....

.... mother when she was two "all baby loveliness gone" (Olsen, 579). At this time in the story, the reader is able to see a change in the way the mother describes her child. The mother goes from seeing Emily as a beautiful baby to seeing her as a thin two-year-old. Emily grows into a young child who was self-conscience about her appearance, "thin and foreign-looking at a time when every girl was supposed to look [like the] replica of Shirley Temple" (Olsen, 580). Emily’s mother pondered several ways to comfort her daughter’s physical insecurities. The next big decision that Emily’s mother had to make was sen .....

His voyage up the Congo is his first experience in freshwater navigation. He is used as a tool, so to speak, in order for Conrad to enter the story and tell it out of his own philosophical mind. He longs to see Kurtz, in the hope's of appreciating all that Kurtz finds endearing in the African jungle. Marlow does not get the opportunity to see Kurtz until he is so disease-stricken he looks more like death than a person. There are no good looks o .....

.... perilous times in China. They all were taught "to desire nothing, to swallow other people's misery, to eat [their] own bitterness." (p. 241) Though not many of them grew up terribly poor, they all had a certain respect for their elders, and for life itself. These Chinese mothers were all taught to be honorable, to the point of sacrificing their own lives to keep any family members' promise. Instead of their daughters, who "can promise to come to dinner, but if she wants to watch a favorite movie on TV, she no longer has a promise" (p. 42), "To Chinese people, fourteen carats isn't real gold . . . [my bracelets] must be twenty-four .....

Phoenix may also be portrayed as a mother bird going out to get nurturing for her baby. The reader may visualize her grandson ad a bird in the nest for his mother. He wears a little patch quilt and peeps out, holding his mouth open like a bird. Phoenix's death portarys her undying love for her grandson. On Phoenix's journey through life, she encountered spirited aspects that have an impact on her life, "References to Christ are abundant, such as when Phoenix has an illusion of .....

.... death. As though he only wishes to rest and forget his troubled soul. We see here for the first time why he wants to die. It is not that he feels there is too much pain or strife in life, but that he is tired with dealing with it and exausted by his efforts. Hamlet says in this speech, in as plain of language as he can, that he is depressed and wants to die. But, he has said that before. This speech gives us our first clear indication as to his reason for craving death. More interestingly, Hamlet shows here his fundamental cowardice and fear. He has been going on for the whole play about how terrible his life is and how much pain .....

.... love, is gone. Emily never experiences a normal relationship. The townspeople do not feel affection for her in the traditional sense. Instead, they regard Emily as "a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town." Emily is somewhat of a recluse. After her father’s death, she is not seen “for a long time.” Two years later, after her lover Homer Barron disappears, she stays alone inside her house for at least ten years. During this time, her only relationship with another person is with her manservent, or “Negro,” Tobe. This relationship mimics that with her father in that she holds .....

.... reader has a good feel on who the characters are, which then leads to the climax of the story. Tension first arrives between Julian and his mother when Julian moves from sitting next to his mother, to a Negro man on the bus. O’Conner uses a good example on page 208, " He stared at her, making his eyes the eyes of a stranger. He felt his tension suddenly lift as if he had openly declared war on her." The reader feels the anger building in Julian’s mother beginning on page 209. It reads, "Her eyes retained their battered look. Her face seemed to be unnaturally red, as if her blood pressure had risen." .....

.... Romeo and Juliet’s parents would never even think of relating to an enemy of the family never the less falling in love with one. Juliet is caught by love that blinds her reason. She even goes as far as stating she will “…deny her name for only the name is an enemy not Romeo”. The older generation accepted traditional beliefs without question.
