I feel that after the reader has become accustomed to it, the switching between characters creates good stopping points. However, my mom found it annoying and didn’t like the switching. Koontz explodes into action during the first chapter, which grips the reader and holds their attention throughout the rest of the book. It shows how people were blinded by the desire for freedom from their former oppressors, so much so, that they attacked anyone and anything that was even remotely related to their past rulers. I think this was effectively done by excellent characterization, using each character to depict a different aspect of society, then contrasting them by making them rivals. Although I don’t believe that she is aware of this, to her her son is just not respecting his father. For example, "’Don’t-wake-Daddy!’ she hissed angrily". Because Larry’s mother didn’t really know that her husband and son were fighting over her, when she had a second child she just turned and took care of it.
