Even though Odysseus is strong and intelligent, he also has enough self-confidence to get him through his journey. If he didn't believe in himself now, how would his men do the same. His men look up to Odysseus and learn from him. Since Odysseus believed in himself he was able to hold his men down so they wouldn't eat the honeyed plant. He also told them that .....

Root 2
Number of words: 561 | Number of pages: 3.... muttering. On the other hand, the common word "talking" is more casual, louder and clearer. That is why I think Haley used " murmuring" instead of the more usual "talking."
Then, Haley used "toubob" instead of the more usual "white men," because the Africans meant "toubob" as an insult and they thought of the white men as devils. For instance, in Chapter 37, "So great was his fury that Kunta was barely aware of the women singing Toubob fa! And when he had finally been chained back down in his place in the dark hold, his heart throbbed with a lust to murder toubob." This sentence implied Kunta's insult, and in Kunta's mind, the wh .....

While reading chapter one, the reader can discover one of the many themes of the story. The need for civilization is the most obvious one. With out civilization man tries to define himself. Maybe that's why Jack Merridew in civilization is the leader of the boys' choir then is the leader of the tribe. How ironic that in the beginning the characters are described as well-educated young boys and turn out to be savage, ignorant boys. This is because they had no understanding of their surroundings and no idea of how to act with .....
