Sonny is an earnest, hard-working civil servant, an educator who once had a seemingly endless supply of concern and affection for those around him. He is attentive to his family's every need, despite the terrible shadow of apartheid. Gradually, though, Sonny becomes more and more connected to his people's struggle, an exceedingly dangerous one, which leaves him with less time for his family.
