was born on August 13, 1926, on a small farm in the municipality of Mayari on the eastern tip of Cuba. His education moved him through most of the country as he went to many prestigious schools. He attended public schools, prep schools and a couple of military schools. He stood out as a brilliant leader and a great athlete and was even courted by several American baseball teams.
