Lyme Borreliosis, also know as Lyme Disease, is caused by Borrelia Burgdorferi, a bacterium. The bacteria are transmitted through deer ticks. The disease is named for the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut, where it was first discovered and diagnosed. Lyme Disease effects many people, as well as domesticated animals such as cats and dogs, as well as horses. The disease is most commonly found along the coastline and near water.
